DescriptionChalmette18NovSmashBrickFloridaCanal.jpg |
Chalmette, Louisiana, area devastated by Hurricane Katrina storm surge. View shows smashed remains of brick house in residential section in the back (north) of Chalmette, with the Florida Canal. Beyond the Florida Canal is the "back levee", bordering a stretch of wetlands. Beyond the wetlands is the MR-GO Canal connecting to the Gulf of Mexico; MR-GO channeled in storm surge and the MR-GO levees failed catestrophically, with a wall of water flowing over the wetlands and over the Florida Canal back levee, and smashing this neighborhood. Across the Florida Canal, the vehicles of contractors working on inspections and repair of the back levee can be seen. Photo by Infrogmation |
