u lift your head — and came in and out through thegarden gate there, on the alley, which he kept locked. Its all coveredup with play-bills now, or you could find the old hinges and lock. Whenanybody spoke to him he wouldnt answer — sames if he was deaf. Oncemy ball went inside and I shinned up over the wall and dropped downamong the bushes and come square on top of him crouching down in acorner looking at me like a cat ready to spring — and his eyes like acats too. I stood staring, and then he crept out of his corner, pickedup the ball, grabbed my left foot and histed me back over the wall. And all the time he hadnt spoken a word. Funny thing w-as that some days you would see him coming outof the gate with a bundle under his arm, looking like a tramp, and thennext night youd meet him rigged out in swell togs and white choker, sames if he was going to a ball. He moved quick too,— one minutehed be turning the corner of the alley and the next hed be gone —like a curl of smoke. 36
Text Appearing After Image:
BEHIND SHINBONE ALLEY Sometimes the cops would watch him, thinking he was up tosome game — keeping a fence, or cracking a crib, or counterfeiting. One of the new ones,— just appinted,— reported to the Captain thathe had seen him sneak in the gate near dayhght looking as if he hadjust stepped out of his carriage, and while he stood wondering what hewas up to, he was out again in a ragged overcoat and an old plug hatcrammed down over his ears. Next day word went around that it wasall right, no matter what he did. After my father died I took to watching him from my upstairswindow, or hanging around the corner with my eye up Shinbone. Ialways liked something mysterious and this fellow was all that. Some-times thered be a light shining through his panes of glass till mostmorning, and then again it would be all dark. Thats how I kept tabson him. One night I see him stop at the corner cake-stand, wrapsomething up, creep into Shinbone, and then the light flashed up andwas out as quick. T
