Charlecote Park Interior. 4 heraldic shields, left to right:

  • Arms of w:Reynold Grey, 2nd Baron Grey of Ruthin (c.1322-1388), who married Eleanor Le Strange. Arms: Grey of Ruthin impaling Le Strange of Knokyn. These are the arms of Strange of Blackmere: Argent, two lions passant in pale gules (a cadet branch of Strange of Knokyn). The arms of Strange of Knokyn are: Gules, two lions passant in pale argent
  • Arms of w:Reynold Grey, 3rd Baron Grey of Ruthin (c.1362-1440) (son of 2nd Baron Grey of Ruthin), who married firstly, Margaret de Ros, by whom he had six children, and secondly, Joan Astley, whose descendants were the Grey family of Groby, including Queen Lady Jane Grey. Arms: Grey of Ruthin impaling Astley
  • Sir William Lucy of Charlecote, married Eleanor Grey, a daughter of w:Reynold Grey, 2nd Baron Grey of Ruthin. Arms Lucy impaling Grey of Ruthin
  • Sir William Lucy (born 1436) of Charlecote (son of Sir William Lucy of Charlecote and Eleanor Grey), MP for Bedfordshire 1467-8 & 1472-5, married Margaret Brecknock, a daughter and co-heiress of John Brecknock of Studham, Bedfordshire, Treasurer to King Henry VI, as the stained glass window at right records (Source: Richardson, Douglas, Magna Carta Ancestry: A Study in Colonial and Medieval Families, 2nd Edition, p.277[1]). Arms: Lucy impaling Brecknock (Argent, a chevron between three eagle's feet and legs erect erased sable (not listed in Burke's General Armory)). John Brecknock (d.1476) buried - Wraysbury, Berkshire, (memorial brass: "In the chancel of Wraysbury Church is an early 16th-century (sic) brass with the figure of a knight in armour, and the indent of the figure of a lady in butterfly head-dress. Above the figures are the remains of an elaborate double canopy, with two shields in white metal, a fragment of a third shield, and the indent of a fourth. One shield is charged with a cheveron between three eagles' legs razed, and the other two remaining shields bear the same charges impaling a cheveron." "In 1463 Edward IV granted Wyrardisbury (Wraysbury) Manor to John Brecknock to hold by fealty and rent of a pair of spurs, or 3s. 4d. yearly. (fn. 115) He died in 1476, (fn. 116) and his widow Elizabeth held the manor until her death in 1489. (fn. 117) She was succeeded by Sybil daughter of David Brecknock, son of John Brecknock and wife of Thomas Stonor.... Richard Duke of York had secured for John Brecknock the office of treasurer of the household to Henry VI, an office which had involved the advance of large sums of money without payment".
