| Description |
English: The house at 305 Cameron Street, located between North Fairfax and North Royal Streets in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia, was built c.1750 by William and Nancy Duvall. In 1783, it was the site of Duvall's Tavern, where George Washington was entertained on December 31 by the City of Alexandria to celebrate the end of the Revolutionary War. From 1789 to 1791, it was the residence of Charles Lee, the port of Alexandria's first Collector of Customs, and was official declared an Historic Customs House for this in 1976. Lee, who was Collector until 1793, was the brother of "Light Horse Harry" Lee (Henry Lee III) and the uncle of Robert E. Lee. From 1793 to 1807 the building was the banking house of the Bank of Alexandria – the first bank chartered in Virginia – after which it moved to the building at 133 North Fairfax Street. In the 1960s, the house was the site of Frankie Welch's dress shop. It is now a private residence. (Description sources: "Old Town Alexandria Historical Plaques: Duvall House", plaques on site) |
