English: Captioned "The chief's residence at Kaigan, showing totem poles". A house with horizontal siding and glass windows, two totem poles. The original sketch or photograph from which this engraving was made was probably by Scidmore, 1883. Scidmore's text makes it clear that this location was Howkan on Long Island, Cordova Bay, Alaska and that the original village of Kaigahnee, as she spells it, was a different place "many miles distant"; she says that the traders called the present village "Kaigahnee" more often than Howkan. Author's name on the publication was given as E. Ruhamah Scidmore. |
