Икона «Спас Эммануил» Москва. Оружейная палата, 1680-е гг.

Небесные Силы и держава в руках напоминают западную иконографию Спасителя Мира, однако изображение Эммануила, юного Христа, не характерное для Запада, встречается лишь в византийской традиции и обозначает евхаристического (в данном случае) и апокалипсического Агнца, который являлся символом последнего времени. Обращает на себя внимание портретное сходство между образом Спаса Эммануила и парсуной Федора Алесксеевича.

Уникальную технику, в которой выполнено произведение, называемую обычно аппликацией на деревянную основу, можно отнести к декупажу (фр. decouper – вырезать). Эта декоративная техника заключается в скрупулезном вырезании изображений из различных материалов (дерева, кожи, тканей, бумаги и т. п.), которые затем наклеиваются или прикрепляются иным способом на различные поверхности для декорирования. В России такая техника до XVII века не была известна, ее привезли в Оружейную палату западные художники.
