Español: El nitrógeno de la atmósfera (N2) es incorporado a la biosfera exclusivamente por bacterias. En tierra, por las bacterias fijadoras de los nódulos radicales de leguminosas y algunas otras plantas. Los animales herbívoros lo adquieren de las plantas que comen. Los restos orgánicos de los animales, al descomponerse, son absorbidos por los organismos descomponedores (bacterias y hongos) y se incorporan al suelo. En el mar, también hay bacterias fijadoras de nitrógeno.
Las bacterias del suelo fijadoras de nitrógeno, mediante el proceso de amonificación, transforman el N2 en NH4+. A su vez, las bacterias nitrificantes, mediante el proceso de nitrificación transforman el NH4+ en NO2-. Otras bacterias nitrificantes transforman el NO2- en NO3-. Finalmente, las bacterias desnitrificantes transforman el NO3- en N2, que vuelve a la atmósfera. El N2 también es transformado en NH4+ a través de la fijación industrial principalmente para la fabricación de abonos. En el mar, el nitrógeno atmosférico también es transformado en NH4+ a través de la fijación biológica, principalmente por cianobacterias (los rayos favorecen el proceso). El proceso de anammox, que llevan a cabo algunas bacterias anaerobias, transforma directamente NO2- en gas nitrógeno (N2), que vuelve a la atmósfera.
