Summary edit

Description This is The Citadel of Cairo, or the Saladin Citadel, a medieval fortification that rises on a promontory of the Mokattam Hills overlooking Old Cairo. The citadel had its beginnings in 1176, when construction began under Saladin of the Ayyubid Dynasty that ruled Egypt at the time, in order to protect Cairo from Crusaders and to allow for a secure center of government in the wake of the dissolution of the Fatimid Caliphate. Construction of this initial fortification was ongoing during the reigns of the next two sultans, and was most likely finished sometime around 1220 or 1230, with the first sultan residing in the citadel’s palace being Sultan al-Adil, with evidence pointing to the palaces being finished in 1206. The citadel was vacated by the Ayyubid Dynasty by the 1240s in favor of another fortification. The Mamluks, whom ruled from 1250 to 1517, made several alterations to the fortification and made it the residence of their sultans, expanding and improving the complex. During the Ottoman period from 1517 to 1798, the citadel was neglected after the Mamluk buildings were stripped of their precious and valuable decorations, which were sent to Istanbul to adorn buildings there. However, extensive construction, including new palaces, a mosque, Gates, and additional walls, were undertaken. In 1805, the Ottomans reclaimed Egypt from the French, and Muhammad Ali was appointed as the sultan by the Ottomans, undertaking extensive reconstruction projects, and making himself the de facto independent ruler of Egypt. The impressive mosque in this photo was built in the Ottoman style between 1828 and 1848, in memory of Tusan Pasha, one of Ali’s sons, whom died in 1816. However, the mosque came at the expense of historical Mamluk palace structures that stood on the site, which were demolished in an effort by Ali to overtake their physical legacy in Egypt.
