Description

When William Hobson learned of the New Zealand Company’s supposed ‘government’ in May 1840, he despatched Colonial Secretary Willoughby Shortland to Port Nicholson. With him were troops from the 80th Regiment, mounted police, and orders to dismantle any New Zealand Company council, flags or insignia he found. They arrived on the evening of 2 June and sent copies of Hobson’s proclamations of sovereignty ashore. However bad weather prevented them from landing the next day.

Shortland and four members of the police force landed near Pipitea Pā on the afternoon of 4 June, where they were met by Colonel Wakefield and others of the New Zealand Company. Here Shortland read Hobson’s proclamations (www.flickr.com/photos/archivesnz/16085443964), and ended the Company’s counter-power to the British Crown.

This long-format panorama of Wellington (2100 mm x 200 mm) was lithographed by W. Richardson in 1841, from a sketch by Luke Nattrass. It shows the view from the sea of Wellington a year after settlement by Pākehā, including named houses, businesses, pā and ships. At the right hand side of the panorama (number 50) is the site where Shortland read the proclamations on 4 June.
