Summary edit

Description
English: Clay Pits near Calvert. This view looking south-west from close by the bridleway between Calvert and Greatmoor is of the clay pits at the southern end of Calvert Landfill Site, see 439660. When Calvert Brickworks opened in 1900, the material extracted for making the bricks was the Lower Oxford Clay, and the first pits were dug south of the Oxford to Bletchley railway and to the north of the Charndon-Calvert road. The brickworks became part of the London Brick Company in the late 1920's, and as demand for bricks grew, new pits were opened south of the Charndon-Calvert road. By the time brick production at Calvert ceased in 1991, eight huge pits had been dug over the years, and the one here is pit 7. The brickworks, and its nine chimneys, was demolished in 1995. However even as early as 1977 permission had been given for the older worked out pits south of the Charndon-Calvert road to be used for landfill, beginning with pits 4, 5 and 6, and the pits have been successively filled in. Now as in this photo the north side of pit 7 is being filled in.
