English: Clay mechanisms in sedimentary rocks with fresh water:

(a) Migration: dragging forces release clay particles from the pore wall (1) to the pore space plugging the pore throats (2).

(b) Swelling: Specific clay particles such as montmorillonite adsorb water, increasing their size and blocking pore throats.
