Summary edit

Description
English: Sunny and superbly clear skies over the Iberian Peninsula allowed the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Aqua satellite to capture a gorgeous true-color image of the Spain and Portugal on February 2, 2022. The unobstructed view permits a view of many of the stunning natural features of the region. The Meseta Central, the mountainous plateau sitting in the center of the Peninsula, wears shades of tan and brown which contrast with the deep greens of the coastal lowlands to the west. Snow tops the peaks of the western edge of the Pyrenees, the mountain range separating Spain from France, and Spain’s Cantabrian Mountains. In the southeast, the rugged, tan-tinted Baetic Mountains rise near the Mediterranean coast. Spain spans most of the area of the Iberian Peninsula, with Portugal lying along most of the southwestern coast. Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of continental Europe sits in the Sintra Mountain Range of Portugal. Gibraltar, a small territory of the United Kingdom, covers about 2.6 square miles (6.7 sq km) at the tip of a peninsula that juts into the Strait of Gibraltar on the southern coast of Spain.
