Description Cloak and dagger cuckoo bee. Thyreus nitidulus. Size: 1.4 mm. This bee exploits other species to raise its offspring. Females stalk their hosts( blue Banded Bees and Teddy Bear Bees), sneaking into nests (burrows in the ground) under ­construction and laying their eggs, which hatch early to plunder the nests’ nectar and pollen reserves. The males roost outdoors at night on sticks and twigs holding on by their mandibles. I spent some time this afternoon looking for them as when it is cold and wet they are very slow and tend to just sit there. Last year I found 6 of them all perched on the same twig
