Description
English: Close-up of the Upper Penrhydd 'Caban' The Caban was not just a place to eat. It was also the centre of social activity. Each caban had an elected 'Llywydd' (president). After eating, there would often be formal discussions, chaired by the 'Llywydd', on the topics of the day ranging from union matters and politics to religion and sport. An annual eisteddfod would also be held over a period of a week or more with competitions for singing, reciting, playing a musical instrument, composing poetry and 'ambulance skills'. Local ministers would invited to act as adjudicators. During the periods of religious revival, the last was in 1904-5, mid-day prayer meetings would be held in the 'caban', and, even decades afterwards, young sprigs had to mind their language in the 'caban' or they would soon incur the wrath of the president. Bad language, tolerated on the galleries, was taboo in the 'caban'. Photo L000470 on the following link http://www.llechicymru.info/MainGallery/index_2.english.htm shows a caban eisteddfod at Votty Mills, Blaenau Ffestiniog.
