Français : Clovis à la bataille (de Soissons ?). Baptême de Clovis. Enluminure des Grandes chroniques de France (1471). BNF, manuscrit français 2609, fol. 18 r.
Left: King Clovis of France (died 511) in battle, probably the Battle of Tolbiac, which ocurred between 496 and 506. Gregory of Tours was the first to have mentioned the element that has shaped subsequent interpretations of Tolbiac as climactic in European history: Clovis is said to have attributed his success to a vow that he had made: if he won, he would convert to the religion of the Christian God who had aided him, also the religion of his wife Clotilde. Gregory of Tours records Clovis's prayer in chapter II of the History of the Franks: "O Jesus Christ, you who as Clotilde tells me are the son of the Living God, you who give succor to those who are in danger, and victory to those accorded who hope in Thee, I seek the glory of devotion with your assistance: If you give me victory over these enemies, and if I experience the miracles that the people committed to your name say they have had, I believe in you, and I will be baptized in your name". He is shown going into battle with a standard displaying his pre-baptismal (attributed) coat of arms: Sable, three toads or (tinctures vary in other sources). Right: The Baptism of King Clovis at Reims. Clovis converted to (Nicene) Christianity following the Battle of Tolbiac, in accordance with his vow. He was baptised on Christmas Day, after the Battle (thus between 496 and 506), in a small church in the vicinity of the subsequent Abbey of Saint-Remi in Reims. The event was recorded by Gregory of Tours later in the 6th century. Clovis stands in a baptismal font, naked, hands joined in prayer. Remigius, Bishop of Reims, receives chrismatory from the Holy Ghost descending as a dove. On his baptism Clovis is presented by an angel with a new (attributed) coat of arms: the Lilies of France, here shown as three, which was in reality the number adopted by King Charles V in 1376. Attributed arms only as heraldry in Europe did not commence until about 1200. Arms of French kings circa 1200 to 1376: Azure semée-de-lis or (France (ancient). Arms after 1376: Azure, three fleurs-de-lis or (France (modern)). |
