English: The Coat of Arms of The Roman Catholic Diocese of Las Vegas
"The arms of the Diocese of Las Vegas are composed of four main sections. The first and main section of the design is gold (yellow) to reflect the arid desert region of the Southwestern United States and, in particular, Nevada, which makes up most of the diocese. This field is surrounded by a blue indented chief which gives symbolic representation to the many mountains in the landscape under the deep blue western sky. The third portion is the blue and silver (white) wavy bars at the base of the design. They honor the Colorado River whose waters are such a significant part of the region. Finally, at the center of the design is a Joshua Tree, technically known as the Yucca Brevifolia, which is indigenous to the area. This particular type of yucca tree is called the Joshua Tree because of the sword shaped leaves, on outstretched limbs, recalling the posture of the prophet Joshua as he pointed his spear at the city of Ai, as recorded in the old testament (Joshua 8:18)." http://dioceseoflasvegas.org/BishopsCoatOfArms.shtml |
