Tento symbol bol prijatý ústavou Československej republiky 11. júla 1960. Autorom skice bol akad. mal. A. Hollý, a symbol na sa pavézu ČSSR dostal tak, že Slovensko bude reprezentovať motív Slovenského národného povstania. (Symbolizuje oheň pod Kriváňom.) Autorom definitívne schválenej koncepcie štátneho znaku bol akad. mal. Milan Hegar.
