DescriptionCoat of arms within St James, Shipton (1) - geograph.org.uk - 1446511.jpg | Hatchment in St James's Church, Shipton, Shropshire, for funeral of Thomas More (d 1804) of More; of Linley Hall in Bishop's Castle; and of Larden Hall, all in Shropshire, whose mural monument is adjacent. (Source: https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1367573). Descended from an ancient family which held the manor of "La More", Shropshire, by grand serjeanty of providing a force of 200 soldiers and serving as constable of the king's army whenever the king in person should invade Wales and to carry with his own hands the king's standard. In 1620 the four children of Katharine More of Shipton, Shropshire, were banished to America on the Mayflower by her husband, w:Samuel More, MP for Shropshire in 1656, in the belief that he was not the biological father. Only Richard More (1614 – c. 1694/1696) survived, buried at Salem, Massachusetts, the only armiger (gentry class) among the pilgrims, and the only surviving contemporary grave. Samuel married again, producing further offspring who inherited his estates, including Thomas More (d 1804) of Larden Hall, who in 1795 married Harriott Mytton, a daughter of Thomas Mytton of Shipton Hall. His son was Rev. Robert Henry Gayer More (1798-1879) who was succeeded by his nephew Robert Jasper More. ( Burke's Genealogical and Heraldic History of the Landed Gentry, 15th Edition, ed. Pirie-Gordon, H., London, 1937, pp.1626-7, "More of Linley") . Arms: Sable, a swan close proper beaked gules all within a bordure engrailed or (More); impaling: Per pale azure and gules, an eagle displayed with two heads or a bordure engrailed of the last (Mytton) (Burke, Sir Bernard, The General Armory, London, 1884, p.721). |
