Description

Quartered arms of Pine-Coffin adopted in 1796 by Rev. John Pyne-Coffin after inheriting the estates of his kinsman Richard Bennett-Coffin (d.1796). (Vivian, Lt.Col. J.L., (Ed.) The Visitations of the County of Devon: Comprising the Heralds' Visitations of 1531, 1564 & 1620, Exeter, 1895, pp.210-11). Heraldry: Quarterly of eight: 1: Azure crusily of cross crosslets or, three bezants (Coffin of Alwington) 2: Gules, a chevron ermine between three pine apples or (Pyne of East Down, Devon:) 3: Gules, a buck's face ermine horned or (Downe of East Down, Devon, for Elinor Le Downe, daughter and heiress of Phillip Le Downe of East Down , Devon, wife of Oliver Pyne (fl.15th century) of Hame in Cornwall, which marriage brought the Pyne family to East Down, which was their seat for many generations. For the daughter and heiress of "Kellawaith", wife of William Ilcombe, whose daughter and heiress Thomasine Ilcombe married Robert Pyne of Cornwall, son of Oliver Pyne and Elinor Le Downe. See Vivian, p.632) 5: Gules, two lions passant guardant in pale argent a bordure sable (Ilcombe ?) 6: Ermine, a fess sable between in chief two demi-lions rampant in base three mascles gules (Salle of Monkokehampton, for Jane Salle, daughter and co-heiress of Robert Salle of Monkokehampton, wife of John Pyne of Hame in Cornwall, son of Robert Pyne and Thomasine Ilcombe.
