Text
editCol. George Duryea, Glen Cove, from a complication of diseases which were super-induced by a wound he received in the late war. Col. Duryea was born at Great Neck, Long Island, in 1832. He was the son of Henry Vanderbilt Duryea, lineal descendant of Jost Duryea, a French Huguenot who came to this country and settled at New Utrecht in 1665. His mother was Elizabeth Wright. At the outbreak of the rebellion Col. Duryea joined the Fifth New York Volunteer Zouaves, known as Duryea's Zouaves. Entering as a first lieutenant, he rose successively to the ranks of captain, major, and finally to that of lieutenant. In the battle of Gaines Mill, January 27, 1862, Colonel Duryea received a ball in the abdomen while leading a charge and was forced to give up military duty for two years. After the war he made his home at Glen Cove. He had an interest in the National Starch Manufacturing Company, which was organized by his father. He was a member of the Loyal Legion, and the Veteran Association of the Fifth New York Volunteers. He was also a Mason.
