To test the courage of SamuelSturtevant, the carrier on this Worcester division, someBrookfield men planned to attack him on the very spotin the Spencer woods where the robbery of the mail-coachwas to have taken place. The first direct movement inthe game was to see that the charges were stealthily drawnfrom Sturtevants pistols immediately before he set outfrom Brookfield in the night on the arrival of the mailfrom the west. This was done, and the assailing partyproceeded to the appointed place, where the attack onSturtevant was made. The latter however met the aggres-sors with such furious and determined resistance as tocompletely defeat their plans to carry off the mail. Namesof this party were secured, and on being called into courtwere each compelled to pay a fine amounting to fifty dollars,and costs of court, for as they expressed it a little harmless

As Smith left no mail at the office,the postmaster, Maturin L. Fisher, went in hot hasteafter Simeon Burt to know where the Boston mail was.Burt in turn sought Smith, who was in the stable caringfor his horses. But Smith could not tell where the mail-bagwas unless it was up in Salisburys brook. Investigationwas made and the mail-bag found in the brook, wherethey used to drive through the stream very near the Salis-bury mansion at Lincoln square. It was nearly sixty years ago that on the eighth dayof January, in the afternoon, the mail-coach, well filledwith passengers, left Worcester for Barre and the stationsbeyond.
