Henry from that momenttook his place among the leaders of thepatriot party in Virginia. He had struck a 336 chord which responded in every Americanheart; he had denied the right of the kingto make laws for the colonies. The remonstrance of Massachusetts wasfollowed by similar appeals from Connecti-cut, New York, Rhode Island and Virginia.The petition of New York was couched insuch strong terms that no member of Par-liament could be found bold enough to pre-sent it. These remonstrances were unheededby Parliament, which pronounced them ab-surd and insolent. That body persistedin its determination to tax the colonies, andGrenville, the prime minister, warned theAmericans that in a contest with GreatBritain they could expect nothing but defeat.He announced the intention of the Englishgovertvment to levy the taxes, and graciouslyadded that
