Notes

White House copy of the 1818 painting Notes by Kloss, William, et al. Art in the White House: A Nation's Pride. Washington, D.C.: The White House Historical Association, 2008:

"Drayton, posed in the formal yet asymmetrical grand manner style borrowed from English portraiture, is seated among accessories carefully chosen to heighten his dignity. The diagonally flowing red drapery that sweeps downward behind him and covers the table lends drama to the work. The subject's impassive head is silhouetted against a neutral wall that gives way to a view of an intensely blue sky with . . . pink-and-white clouds. . . .

"Drayton was to serve in Congress from 1825 to 1833, during the heated debates over John C. Calhoun's nullification doctrine."

Public domain

The author died in 1872, so this work is in the public domain in its country of origin and other countries and areas where the copyright term is the author's life plus 100 years or fewer.

This work is in the public domain in the United States because it was published (or registered with the U.S. Copyright Office) before January 1, 1929.

The official position taken by the Wikimedia Foundation is that "faithful reproductions of two-dimensional public domain works of art are public domain".
This photographic reproduction is therefore also considered to be in the public domain in the United States. In other jurisdictions, re-use of this content may be restricted; see Reuse of PD-Art photographs for details.
