Description
English: Built in 1961-1962, this Modern International-style tower was designed by John J. Reitz for the Columbia Gas Company of West Virginia, and is also known as the Manufacturers Heat and Light Company Building. The building features curtain walls on the upper floors with blue enameled spandrel panels and projected vertical aluminum mullions, red granite cladding at the columns and base, a butterfly canopy over the main entrance door, a one-story podium at the west side of the building, clad in concrete panels, with a mosaic on the curved front facade that depicts Wheeling’s history, including McColloch's Leap, Betty Zane’s rush to aid at Fort Henry during the American Revolutionary War, and the industrialization of Wheeling, buff brick cladding on the rear facade of the first floor, and a large panel of exposed steel structure and concrete block, where the building formerly sported a blue glazed brick facade with a stylized gas flame, also made of blue glazed brick, which had become destabilized and needed to be rebuilt. The building is a noncontributing structure in the Wheeling Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. The building is presently being renovated to house the offices and programs of Helping Heroes, a charity that assists military veterans.
