Summary edit
DescriptionCommemorative stone at Rest And Be Thankful - geograph.org.uk - 1657643.jpg |
English: Commemorative stone at Rest And Be Thankful The section of Wade's Military Road over the summit of Glen Croe was completed in 1748 by the 24th Regiment who erected a stone bench inscribed 'Rest And Be Thankful'. In 1768 the 93rd Regiment repaired the summit stretch. In 1814 responsibility for the road was handed over to the Commissioners of Highland Roads and bridges. The stone records both these events. The old Rest and Be Thankful was replaced by a new stretch - the modern A83 - in 1937. http://www.arrocharheritage.com/HistoryOfRABT.htm |
