Summary edit
DescriptionCommercial Hotel Block, Buffalo, New York, c. late 1860s (from Views of Old-Time Buffalo).jpg | The Commercial Hotel Block, occupying the northeast corner of Main and Ohio Streets in Buffalo, New York, as seen in 1868 or '69. (The date is ascertained by the sign for the offices of George H. Johnson. A native of Manchester, England and former manager of the Architectural Iron Works in New York City, Johnson became an innovator in the construction of fireproof grain elevators; he kept an office in Buffalo in the aforementioned years during the construction of the Plimpton Elevator at the foot of Chicago Street, Buffalo's first and only brick-binned elevator.) The building was constructed about 1840 and demolished in 1882, by which time the hotel had ceased operations and the building had been subdivided into offices. The KeyBank Center occupies the site today. |
