English: An oil painting "Hyder Ally Captures General Monk, 8 April 1782" by Louis-Philippe Crépin (1772–1851) depicting the battle between Joshua Barney's ship Hyder-Ally and the HMS General Monk. In 1974, the U.S. Government Printing Office and Naval History Division, Department of Navy, produced a series of color lithograph prints dedicated to naval actions during American Revolution, including a print of Crépin's work, series No.3.

Ij ^ ■5! <! was restored to the prize, and Barney made a cruise inher on a secret mission to the West Indies. The Legislature of Pennsylvania passed a vote ofthanks to Captain Barney, and ordered a gold-hiltedsword to be prepared, which was afterwards presentedto him, in the name of the state, by Governor Dickin-son. It was a small sword with mountings of chasedgold—the guard of which, on the one side had a repre-sentation of the Hyder-Ally, and on the other theGeneral Monk, the sails of each ship set as in the action—the latter ship in the action of striking her flag. Theirhulls, sails, masts, spars and rigging, were all beautifullydelineated by the artist, in open work, resembling theivory fans of the Chinese. We deem it proper to add, as a part of the historyof this brilliant affair, that a painting representing theaction between the Hyder-Ally and the General Monk,was executed in 1802 by L. P. Crepin in Paris by orderof Commodore Barney, while in the service of theFrench
