With a battery andsix hundred marines, he was stationed by an old millwhich is still standing, near the bridge spanning the Iriver, and seems to have done most of the fighting. Of the British loss, the greater number was at this point. ;The Americans stood their ground against the Britishveterans for a time, and the British Colonel in command was killed. Commodore Barney, during the fight, was badlywounded. The battle lasted from one oclock to fouroclock in the afternoon. Our forces were pursued bythe enemy, who entered Washington that evening. During the preparation for the battle, the President, the Attorney-General, the Secretaries of State and War, jtwo members of Congress and Francis Scott Key (whoa few days later wrote the Star Spangled Banner), cameto the field. 158
