During the evolution of actinopterygians, the shapes and functional roles of these three skull elements changed.

Summary edit

Description
English: Paleozoic actinopterygians had a solid cheek region with little mobility of the premaxilla, maxilla, and preopercular bones. In contrast, derived teleosts have a highly mobile maxilla and premaxilla as seen in the largemouthed bass, Micropterus salmoides.
