Title
Complete undecorated cast copper alloy spherical “crotal” bell of possible seventeenth century date (AD 1600 - AD 1700).
Description
English: Complete undecorated cast copper alloy spherical “crotal” bell of possible seventeenth century date (AD 1600 - AD 1700). Length 43mm, maximum diameter 33mm. Weight 35.27g.

The sub-rectangular suspension loop, at the top, is about 13mm long and tapers in width from 9.5mm to 8mm where it terminates with a rounded end. It is 3mm thick and has a small circular perforation (3mm in diameter) which is well off centre. The upper and lower hemisphere is divided by a prominent horizontal rib. At either side of the suspension loop, about half way down the side of the upper hemisphere, is a circular sound hole which is 5.5mm in diameter. Two slightly larger sound holes in the lower hemisphere are integral with a sound “slit”. On one side of the lower hemisphere, mid-way between the sound slit and the rib, there are two pairs of indentations in the shape of "inverted commas", one pair above the other. These are probably a maker's marks. The iron “sound-pea”, sub-round in form, remains intact within the bell although it is heavily corroded. The outer surface of the bell is tinned.
