Summary edit

Description The "Tower of Light" at the top of the tower of the Consolidated Edison Company Building (originally the Consolidated Gas Company Building) at 4 Irving Place at East 14th Street in Manhattan, New York City, as seen from Union Square at 17th Street and Park Avenue South. The building was erected in 1915 (architect: Henry J. Hardenbergh) on the site of the Academy of Music, New York's third opera house. (The name then went to a movie house across the street, which later became The Palladium, and then was torn down for a New York University dormitory.) The tower was added in 1926 (architect: Warren & Wetmore). The "Tower of Light" was designed to look like a minature temple topped by a bronze urn which lights up at night.
