Cephalopholis fulva specimen on display as part of the exhibit "Sailing for Science: The Voyage of the Blossom", hosted by the Cleveland Museum of Natural History in Cleveland, Ohio, in the United States. The three-masted sailing ship Blossom left the United States for Africa, the South Atlantic, and South America on a speciment collecting expedition in 1922. It returned in 1926 with more than 12,000 specimens. Commonly called the coney fish, this marine fish is common in the western Atlantic Ocean from South Carolina to southern Brazil. At its adult size, it averages 6 inches in length and weighs one pound. It is red in color with many small blue spots edged with black line scattered on the body. These fish prefer coral reefs and clear water. Around Caribbean islands, they can be found in shallow water but usually hide in caves or under ledges during the day. They feed mainly on crustaceans and small fish, and sometimes follow eels to feed on the prey they flush out. |
