Before her debut record, “One a Day,” climbed to
#1 in 1964, Connie Smith was a small-town housewife
in Ohio singing at local talent contests. She went on
to set a standard for deeply felt, powerfully delivered
songs of heartache. Of the petite woman with the
enormous voice, Dolly Parton said, “There's only three
real female singers in the world. Streisand, Ronstadt,
and Connie Smith. The rest of us are only pretending.”

"Connie Smith’s husband, Marty Stuart, gave her this 1968 Gibson cherry-sunburst Dove guitar and rhinestone-bedazzled strap, created by western-wear designer Jaime Castaneda of Jaime Custom Tailoring, to replace a nearly identical guitar and strap stolen from her decades earlier. / In 1968, the Gibson guitar company had presented Smith, who taught herself to play guitar when she was eighteen, with a Dove acoustic model, and she had a rhinestone-covered guitar strap made to complement it. By then, Smith was already a chart-topping performer (her debut single, #1 hit “Once a Day,” led into a years-long run of Top Ten songs) and a member of the Grand Ole Opry. / Just before Smith could make her first appearance with the original guitar and strap at the Opry, both items were stolen from her dressing room at the Ryman Auditorium. / Smith donated the replacements and many other personal treasures to the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in 2008, alongside Stuart, who presented priceless pieces of his own. "I think a gift is really when you give something you love and you treasure," she said during the donation ceremony. "Marty is the best at doing that." / Learn more about Country Music Hall of Fame member Connie Smith here: https://countrymusichalloffame.org/artist/connie-smith/ / Artifact photos: Bob Delevante Studios / Connie Smith photo: Marty Stuart "
