Description

British Post-war era Heavy Tank Official designation:- FV214. Tank, Heavy No1, 120mm gun, Conqueror British Registration:- 05 BB 92 Manufacturer:- Royal Ordnance Factory, Dalmuir Total Production:- 185 In service:- 1955 to 1966 Main Armament:- 120mm L1 Rifled gun The Conqueror was developed as a response to the Soviet IS-3. Its main role was to provide long-range anti-tank support for Centurions. This example was one of two recovered in 1986 from Fingeringhoe salt marshes in Essex by the School of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering (SEME) based at Bordon. Named ‘Cyclops’ and ‘Berescheid’, they had served in Germany, probably with the 17/21st Lancers, before being moved to the marshes as range targets. Both were acquired by the Imperial War Museum and this one was restored to running order using parts from the other. The restoration was carried out by the Duxford Military Vehicle Wing with assistance from the Proof and Experimental Establishment at Shoeburyness, Essex, and FVRDE at Chertsey, Surrey. In July 1988 it was exchanged for an IS-2, which remains on display at Duxford, UK. The exchange was made between Russian and British delegations, including Colonel General B. P. Ivanov of the Soviet Committee of War Veterans and General Sir Napier Crookenden. Since repainted overall in the standard museum green with no markings, it is on display in what is best known as Hall 6 of the Kubinka Tank Museum, although its official title is now Pavilion 6 in Area 2 of the Park Patriot museum. Kubinka, Moscow Oblast, Russia.
