Description
English: Clash Between British and Danish Ships in Strait of Gibraltar, 1803

Shows three English frigates that want to search a Danish convoy off Gibraltar on Christmas Eve 1799, but are refused by the frigate HAVFRUEN.

The British frigates are HMS Phoenix, Emerald, and Flora. The incident occurred in December 1799, and involved the Danes firing on a boat from one of the frigates, killing a man, and seizing another boat. The Danish convoy put into Gibraltar where the Danish captain and the British admiral exchanged words, before the Danes left, unmolested. It led in 1800 or so to an exchange of sternly worded letters between the British government and the Danish.
