Description |
English: Cast and wrought lead or lead alloy container of probable later medieval or post medieval date (1400-1700). The container is an irregular sub-circular shape in plan and sub-rectangular in profile. It measures 47.6mm in length, 48.7mm width and is 18.1mm deep, the walls of the container are 4.5mm thick. It weighs 90.53 grams. The container is in the form of a small bowl or dish, which would have been circular before two of the edges were crimped together to form a small pouring spout. The interior and exterior base of the container is flat and the walls are relatively straight, being flared at an angle of approximately 75º from the base. There is no visible decoration on any surface of the container. The external edges have all bee abraded in the ploughsoil and this has caused the dish to become even more asymmetrical. The container is a mid yellowish grey colour with an even abraded patina that covers all surfaces. Without decoration or other factors it is difficult to find a parallel for this artefact. Similar artefacts have been identified as bird seed containers and dated to the later medieval and post medieval periods (1400-1600). However, others have suggested that these containers could be used as grain measures, blood letting cups, inkwells or for water containers/fonts for private homes. A bird seed container can be seen in Brian Read, 1995: 'History beneath our feet', pages 127-128, figure 811. |
