Double Bass

The double bass, in its size, shape, and set of strings, has not yet been standardi- zed. The length of the body is generally around 105 cm, although larger and smaller instruments are not unusual.

It is similar in shape to the viola da gamba with its sloping shoulders and its flat angled back, only the F-holes and the pegbox with the scroll were adopted from the violin family.

Double basses were first mentioned around 1520. Like the violas?, they had 5 to 6 strings, tuned in fourths and thirds. The current form and set of strings was introduced in 1750, although 3-stringed double-basses were not uncommon like

those Richard Strauss demanded for several of his works.
