English: Hailing from either the eastern Mediterranean basin or Carthage and dating from within a century of the year 400 B.C., these glass pendants - in the shape, respectively, of the head of a man (left) and of a ram (right) - are exemplary of the "core forming" technique, in which a mass of glass was placed over a core made of mud, straw, or animal dung, shaped while molten and painted after cooling, and finally hollowed out. As seen in the "35 Centuries of Glass" gallery during an April 2022 visit to the Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, New York. |
