Summary edit

Description
English: Among the most monumental elements of the collection of Louis Comfort Tiffany glassware at the Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, New York is this c. 1905 gilded mosaic column, one of six that were originally installed in Tiffany's retail store in New York City. The column is divided into two segments, each of whose iridescent glass tesserae (or "jewels") are arrayed in starkly different decorative schemes. Above, red and yellow pieces are carefully arranged to echo the silk cords and tassels that would have been part of the decorative curtains hanging from the showroom ceiling, while the lower portion features cool-spectrum colors in a smooth transition from bright blue to deep violet. With a long and storied career of almost 60 years stretching from his recruitment by a Brooklyn glasshouse all the way through his death at an advanced age, Tiffany is easily the most renowned glass artist in U.S. history, as well as that nation's leading exponent of the Art Nouveau movement, with a roster of well-known masterworks too numerous to list. As seen in the museum's "35 Centuries of Glass" gallery during an April 2022 visit.
