clock tower in corning, ny

Summary edit

Description As seen in May 2021, the centerpiece of Centerway Square - part of Corning, New York's lovely Market Street Historic District - is this stone clock tower erected in 1883 by prominent Albany businessman Erastus Corning in honor of his identically-named father, the city's founder and namesake. Built of dark gray basalt imported from Northern Ireland, it stands 50 feet in height, and the bell at its top weighs about 1,400 pounds. As for the square itself, it was originally known as Dickinson House Square (named for a historic hotel that stood until the 1930s on its west side, on what's now the site of Baron Steuben Place) and served its original function as public gathering spot from the beginning of the town's history. The square was pedestrianized and repaved with brick in 1988.
