Summary
editDescriptionCornstone outcrop - geograph.org.uk - 1202847.jpg |
English: Cornstone outcrop. Although I came across this outcrop by chance while crossing the moor, I recognized it as one that had been pictured in an article, by naturalist John Mitchell, on cornstone workings. For more on this article (which had only recently been brought to my attention), and for a description of cornstone, see 1178512.
Mitchell notes that most of the surface cornstone in this area had been removed by the turn of the nineteenth century; he then adds, with reference to the particular outcrop shown in this photograph, that "the largest undisturbed remnant by far occurs just to the south-west of the Lang Dyke on Dumbarton Muir. With its water-worn fissures or 'grikes', this untouched exposure illustrates the relative ease with which cornstone could be quarried using only the most basic hand tools such as crowbars and stone hammers". For another picture, taken on a slightly better day, see: 1213778. The Lang Dyke itself (912926) is distantly visible in the upper left-hand corner of the photo, as a slanting greenish feature slightly darker than its surroundings. |
