Text Appearing Before Image:
It is the moment when Jesus comes forth fromthe rude mockery of the soldiers, clad in a royalrobe, and wearing the crown of thorns. The gov-ernor has bidden one of the soldiers lead the prisonerout on a balcony of the palace. An eager throng ofpeople are waiting outside, but they are not all ene-mies. Among them are a few faithful women, andthey are allowed to press close to the balcony. Atthe sight of her son, treated as a criminal withbound hands, the mother, Mary, falls swooning overthe balustrade, supported by a younger woman. Pilate standing in the doorway behind appeals tothe crowd: I find no fault in him. Behold theman. He has been deeply impressed by his inter-view with Jesus, and is willing to do something inhis behalf. His face is good-natured, we see, butwith no strength of character in it. He is a hand-some man with curling beard carefully trimmed, apparently not a hard man to deal with, but easy-going and selfish. 1 St. John, chapter xix., verses 1-6. 2 /&., verse 16.

From carbon print by Braun. Clement & Co. John Andrew & Son, Sc. ECCE HOMONational Gallery, London ECCE HOMO 59 Jesus stands with drooping head and an expres-sion of suffering resignation. In the menacingfaces before him he sees the hatred which will besatisfied with nothing less than his death. Alreadyhe hears the cruel cry, Crucify him, crucify him.His badge of kingship is the crown of suffering. Were his kingdom of this world, his servants woulddeliver him from his enemies. As the ruler of aheavenly kingdom, he was born to bear witnessunto the truth. The rich mantle, which the soldiers have mock-ingly thrown over his shoulders, falls away andshows the body as it had been bared for the scourg-ing. It is a beautiful form, perfectly developed, and the arms and hands are as delicately modelledas a womans. The face is oval, with regular fea-tures of classic mould, a short parted beard, and longhair falling in disordered curls about it. This is thetypical face of Christ, as it has
