Notes
  • Significance: Designed by Those U. Walter in 1853, the Senate Reception Room is located in the north extension of the Capitol adjacent to the Senate Chamber. The room was designed to function as a public meeting space where constituents could meet informally with their Senators. One of the Capitol's most richly decorated spaces, the room is finished with ornate plaster, tile and artwork. While the space was designed by Walter, it was decorated by Italian painter Constantine Brumidi and the supervising engineer of the north extension, Captain Montgomery C. Meigs. Walter designed a two part room divided by a monumental arch. The southern portion is crowned by a shallow coffered dome and the northern portion by a groin vault. Walter's design envisioned restrained Classical detailing for the room, but Meigs and Brumidi desired the more elaborate Rococo style that was fashionable at the time. The allegorical figures on the ceiling were executed by Brumidi in true fresco technique while other portions of the wall and ceiling decoration were rendered in oil paint. Elaborate plaster ornament, gilding and painted architectural elements frame the artwork. The complex minton tile floor patterns contribute to the overall richness of the room...
