Español: ME: membrana mitocondrial externa. MI: membrana mitocondrial interna. CJ: hendidura de la cresta ("crista junction"). Las proteínas de la cresta mitocondrial se distribuyen con una localización específica: los dímeros de ATP sintasa fuerzan la curvatura en la punta y bordes. La cadena respiratoria se localiza en los laterales. Las proteínas de la hendidura, en el "cuello de botella" contribuyen a la selección de sustancias que entran y salen de la cresta. Los lípidos, especialmente cardiolipina y fosfatidiletanolamina también facilitan la curvatura de la membrana interna en la cresta.
