DescriptionCricket Pavilion - Close House golf course - geograph.org.uk - 1134271.jpg |
English: Cricket Pavilion - Close House golf course Two cricket pitches here, with brick-built pavilion and an opposite score hut (itself a listed building), were developed in the late 1800s. Before the Second World War cricket weeks at Close House attracted famous touring sides. There is a legend that W.G. Grace once played here and undoubtedly took tea in the pavilion. Matches were played regularly when Close House was owned by the University of Newcastle upon Tyne from 1960 to 2004. Although golf has now superseded cricket the pavilion has latterly been the main golf club house. However, the pavilion proved a little small and developments are now well advanced for the building of a new, custom-designed club house on a different site. I hope this beautiful little building can be found a new role. |
