Summary edit

Description
English: Crooked silver birch above a step mire, New Forest This silver birch is very crooked, with more than a right-angle in its trunk. It is growing on the side of a heathland slope where water draining from the higher sandy gravel meets a less permeable layer of clay and seeps out of the hillside. This is the top of a 'step mire', a bog on a slope.
