Description
English: Lateral view of a Crookes tube, an experimental vacuum tube invented by William Crookes around 1875. This is a common type used for demonstrations, first built by Juliusz Plucker. It has a plate in the shape of a Maltese Cross, which can be folded down against the floor of the tube. When a high voltage is applied between the cathode on the left and the anode at the bottom, cathode rays (electrons) are emitted by the cathode, and travel from left to right, striking the glass end wall of the tube, making it fluoresce with a yellow-green glow. When the cross is standing up, as here, it casts a cross shaped shadow on the glowing end wall, showing that cathode rays travel in straight lines.
