Cross section of human ear

Summary edit

Description
English: The human ear can be divided into three main parts: the outer ear, middle ear, and inner ear. The outer ear consists of the visible portion (pinna) and the ear canal. The middle ear contains the eardrum (tympanic membrane) and three small bones (ossicles) called the malleus, incus, and stapes. These bones amplify and transmit sound vibrations to the inner ear. The inner ear comprises the cochlea, responsible for hearing, and the vestibular system, which contributes to balance and spatial orientation. Sound waves are converted into electrical signals in the inner ear, which are then transmitted to the brain through the auditory nerve, enabling the perception of sound. The complex structure of the human ear allows for the intricate process of hearing and maintaining equilibrium.
