| Description | Throngs of Chinese shoppers in a basement Chinese ethnic grocery store/ supermaket. Most were too busy to notice me pointing my camera into the store- in my experience most Chinese business anywhere in the world are pretty skittish about photography on their premises. The present day old Chinatown along Spadina was formerly a Jewish district. With the influx of Chinese immigration during the 1960s due to the lifting of Canada's racial exclusion policies, along with much of the Jewish population moving north along Bathurst Street, Chinese businesses expanded in this area. An earlier Chinatown (called the First Chinatown) was established in the 1890s but was demolished in 1955 to make way for the Toronto City Hall. More notes as we go along.
