Object history
Deutsch: Die früheste urkundliche Erwähnung Merzhausens findet sich in einer Schenkungsurkunde für St. Gallen aus dem Jahre 786. Das Kloster erwarb sich hier bedeutenden Besitz. Seit dem 16. Jahrhundert hatten die Herren Snewlin Bernlapp von Bollschweil die Grundherrschaft zunächst über die Hälfte, später über den ganzen Ort inne, freilich unterbrochen durch die Grundherrschaft der Jesuiten zwischen 1635 und 1775. Das Wappen, das zusammen mit der Flagge am 16. Januar 1964 vom Innenministerium verliehen wurde, greift mit dem St. Galler Bär und dem Snewlin'schen Wappenschild die frühere Besitz- und Herrschaftsgeschichte Merzhausens auf. Seit 1660 hatte die Gemeinde Siegel geführt, deren szenisches Bild (unter anderem ein mit dem Zeichen des Mars belegtes Fachwerkhaus, aus dem ein Tier herausspringt) sich für ein Wappen nicht eignete.
